February 2nd: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, The Meeting of the Lord at Candlemas
This feast day commemorates three distinct but related
historical events in the life of the Holy Family and
a traditional yearly sacramental observance.
It marks the day when Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem for the first time.
Additionally, it required Mary to submit to ritual purification forty days after child birth, sacrificing a pair of turtle doves.
The feast also commemorates the encounter in the temple between the Holy Family and St. Simeon the prophet and St. Anna the prophetess, called the meeting of the Lord.
The blessing of candles for the church and for use in homes, a/k/a Candlemas, reminding us that Jesus is the light of the world.
