December 1, 2021 8:00 pm

December 25th is a Saturday this year (2021). Please note that all Masses celebrated at whatever time on December 25th are Masses of the Nativity of the Lord. Consequently, Vigil Masses for the Feast of the Holy Family are not to be celebrated on December 25th because this feast ranks lower on the table of liturgical days than the Solemnity of Christmas. Both the Nativity of the Lord and the Feast of the Holy Family are days of precept (obligation).
Also, Vigil Masses for the Nativity of the Lord are not to be celebrated before 4:00 PM. Vigil Masses are always celebrated in the evening. “Evening” begins at 4:00 PM (see Christus Dominus, Code of Canon Law, and The General Instruction of the Roman Missal). Permission was given for last year for Vigil Masses for the Nativity of the Lord to be celebrated before 4:00 PM because of the extraordinary situation brought about by the Coronavirus Pandemic at that time.
